Adventures of a Female Medical Detective: In Pursuit of Smallpox and AIDS, by Mary Guinan, PhD, MD, is an engaging book detailing her career in public health and infectious diseases. Dr Guinan is a physician-scientist, professor of epidemiology and community health, and the founding dean of the School of Community Health Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The 12 chapters in her book each present a different story from her career, which spans more than 40 years.

The book's writing and tone is targeted toward people with an interest, but not necessarily expertise, in science and medicine. The stories highlight the joys and fulfillment of a career in public health, without minimizing the difficulties in working with diseases of the disenfranchised.
